IBHS Self-Inspection Checklist

IBHS is a large insurance research institute and consortium that has funded large parts of the fire research in the North American Continent in the past 30 years, and that is the source of the data used in most wildfire regulations in the US and Canada.

IBHS recently started a wildfire certification program exclusively for homes in California (although it is likely that this program will soon spread to other Western states): Wildfire Prepared Home, a Program of IBHS - Resources. Some insurance companies (such as CSAA) are already referencing this certification program in some of their non-renewal letters. There is reason to believe that, in a small number of years, their Wildfire Prepared Home Base level certifications will be required by many insurers in order to obtain coverage.

IBHS provides a Self-Inspection Checklist [PDF] that covers both the Base and the Plus Level. The Base Level is definitely achievable by almost all houses (although it does require a class-A roof). The Plus Level could be very costly to reach for most already-built homes in Berkeley.
