I’ve heard mixed recommendations about using gravel vs. mulch within the 5-foot defensible space zone. Are there fire-safe mulches that still help retain moisture?

Decomposed granite is fire-safe and when properly installed will slow evaporation. If there are no plants in the 0-5’ zone, moisture retention is less of an issue, but you may still want to encourage rainwater soil percolation (as long as foundation erosion isn’t a risk).
