I, ____________________ am a Berkeley Resident and am writing to ask you to approve the proposed EMBER Ordinance as presented by the Berkeley Fire Dept.
Now is the time to take pragmatic action and adopt unadulterated, scientifically validated mitigation measures that are known to reduce the vulnerability of a neighborhood from ignition during a wildfire are the best chance that a community has to minimize the risk of this vegetative to urban fire transition. The EMBER ordinance addresses these vulnerabilities to achieve the safest conditions that we know to be possible sans a managed retreat from the Berkeley Hills. The ordinance is structured to address measures to be implemented (1) before a fire occurs, (2) when forecasted fire weather is announced, and (3) in response to an actual ignition during a period of high fire danger.
While some of these measures will have a tremendous financial impact on affected residents, I urge you to move forward with approving the ordinance and at the same time aggressively seek out possible financial resources to help mitigate the costs to individual homeowners.
