Adding vegetation in zone 0 with the fire department's blessing 😉

Whichever way we look at it, for most houses, zone 0 is going to look bare: in Berkeley, the recommendation for zone 0 is to have absolutely no vegetation, except for (a) trees with foliage more than 10 ft above the roof line, or outside of 5 ft from the walls, and (b) plants of less than 18" in ceramic pots of less than 5 gallons.

To improve the appearance of zone 0, we can be inspired by the British art of garden design: beyond rocks, water features and metal sculptures, we can use mirrors! Mirrors are found frequently in British gardens, and they are pretty much the only way to look at green vegetation in zone 0  Because we are in earthquake country, it may not be a bad idea to use stainless mirrors, such as this one in 304 steel with #8 mirror finish, from Cut2SizeMetals. This particular example is a 16 or 20 gauge sheet of 304 stainless steel, polished to a high grade of finish.

More classical mirrors typically show an arbor look and multiple glass panels, such as the one shown in the image below. The risk, of course, for us in an earthquake-prone environment, is glass damage due to our frequent earth movements.

Traditional paneled outside glass garden mirrors are easy to find in multiple commercial websites such as Wayfair or Etsy. Be careful, however, to verify that no part of the mirror (such as, for instance, the backing, often made of substances like MDF or Masonite) are combustible. We are looking for mirrors made of glass and metal only!

The effect of a mirror in Zone 0

The following images are not Zone 0 examples, but do show what a Zone 0 use of a mirror could look like. Some of these mirrors may have combustible parts: they are used to illustrate the use of mirrors in Zone 0.
