The information was just shared with us by an independent insurance broker.
In the past, if you missed a payment deadline, the insurer would usually give you a few days grace. Not so now - missing a payment deadline is now a reason to cancel the policy.
The insurer may then write a policy for a much higher amount, or decline to do so - and the number of insurers writing policies in CA is much smaller than it used to be.
This is not to mean that missing a home insurance payment will lead to a cancelation. However, your carrier may decide to cancel you in that event.
Many carriers have already announced that they would drop a specific number of accounts from a large number of zip codes, that include Berkeley zip codes, in order to reduce their exposure. It seems that some might now decide to use a missed payment as an easy way to fulfill their cancellation plans.
