2024-12 UC Berkeley graduate students report on Berkeley Evacuation

This interesting 2024 report, authored by several graduate students at UC Berkeley, was recently discussed in a City of Berkeley Commission.

City planning graduate students publish emergency access and evacuation report for the Berkeley Hills - UC Berkeley College of Environmental Design

The authors have a set of recommendations in the report, many of which have been requested by local residents over the past few years. Among them:

  • actually enforce existing parking regulations on the hillside, since most streets may end up as evacuation routes
  • no parking on Red Flag days
  • Residential Parking Permit (RPP) Program to limit the number of cars
  • Subsidize Transportation Network Company Trips (Uber/Lyft etc.)
  • Improve Transit Options
  • Increase No Parking Zones

In case the UC Berkeley page link goes away:

Thanks to Rena Fischer and Chris Cullander for access to the report
