Replacing two wood gates with metal: an $800 contractor project

One of our neighbors just completed a gate replacement project in the process of getting Zone 0 compliant. She is not in the Grizzly Peak Mitigation Area (although not far from it) and is not in a rush: she got two gates done, but has not installed a metal panel next to one of them yet. The project was installed by a contractor.

Gate # 1 (still needs a small fence panel)

Gate #2 (no fence panel needed)

Gate
The gates were purchased at Home Depot: NUVO IRON 33 in. x 68 in. Garnet Gate Door with Arched External Rail for 36 in. Door Openings (Hardware Included) GGI0440 - The Home Depot. The material is painted galvanized steel.

Budget

  • each gate: $200
  • each installation—labor: $200, about 4 hours of work per gate, including redoing a simple concrete anchor for the outer gate post. For both gates, the inner gate post remains attached to the house (it is appropriate per the fire code).
  • Total cost for two gates: approximately $800

Notes

  • Future work: in the future, the homeowner will still need to replace the first two feet of wood fence to the left of Gate #1.
  • Project updated with second gate
