April 11 Volunteer Weekend: Be a part of the solution!

Wildfire prevention: be a part of the solution.

The April 11 neighborhood wildfire cleanup day sponsored by the Berkeley Ridge Firewise Neighborhood Groups and HelpBerkeley, and largely funded by a UC Chancellor’s Community Partnership Fund grant, was a tremendous success! We cleared up to 5 tons of leaf and vegetation debris and packed it into leaf bags that the City hauled away. We cleared another 325 cubic yards of chippable material that was picked up by Berkeley’s Chipper Program.

At several of our sites, we encountered a large amount of non-vegetative combustible material including construction debris that had to be cleared before we could address the vegetation. The trash itself was an ember fire hazard. So, we ordered two dumpsters and cleaned up the sites before we started to work on the vegetation. We hauled away 34 cubic yards of trash and debris.

At two of our sites, we found a substantial amount of hazardous substances. So we packed the material into six tote boxes and took it to the Alameda County disposal site in Oakland.

We take action to make our neighborhood, and the City as a whole, safer.

We hold many events over the year. If you want to join the community effort to make our neighborhood safer, DM me.

A problem only remains a problem until it is solved!
